Strathclyde Police is the largest police force in Scotland with about 8,500 police officers and civilian staff. Its area of operation covers 5,348 square miles, the terrain of which range from mountainous to cultivated farmland, major industrial towns and thriving holiday resorts. There are 1,500 miles of coastline and 8,000 miles of roads, including 80 miles of roadway, all of which require a complex system of policing. Last year the Force fleet of 829 vehicles covered 21,848,285 miles. Strathclyde Police came into existence on May 16th 1975 with reorganisation of local government in Scotland. It incorporates the previous police forces of Argyll, Ayrshire, Dunbartonshire, Lomarkshire, Renfrew and Bute, Glasgow, and part of Surlingshire, the combined population of which is 2,4 million people, half the population of Scotland. The Chief Constable has a deputy and six assistant chief constables handling crime, administration, personnel, operations, community services, and traffic and communications. |
